We are one with each other and we are one with Source.
For some, accepting this on blind faith is not enough as many of us long for a tangible, personal experience of The Divine. Fortunately, life offers a variety of spiritual experiences and opportunities to heal our perception of separateness. We must only recognize them as such.
About seven years ago, I was swimming in my snorkel gear off the coast of Hawaii and very grateful to be in the cool ocean. As I dove into the clear turquoise waters of the Pacific, I felt completely free—free from my health issues, free from my worries and even free from my attachment to life itself. For the first time, I realized that the ocean I was swimming in touches every other ocean, connecting all the land masses on earth, and through the cycle of evaporation and rain, it is the same water that has been here since the beginning of time—touching everywhere and every thing in a continuous cycle, supporting growth and rebirth. I was in a complete state of awe and grace as these thoughts drifted in and out of my awareness. Then the dolphins came.
To my delight, I watched them jump, play, dance and love each other. I saw mothers nursing their babies and lovers swirling sensually as they dove down together. One large dolphin swam away from the pod and I followed him. After a few minutes, he noticed and slowed down enough for me to catch up. For quite awhile, we swam together and suddenly we made eye contact, and time stood still. I remember feeling an intense energy pulsating throughout my body and I felt my heart expand. I was overcome with emotion as joyful tears mixed with salt water in my mask and laughter echoed through my snorkel tube. In that moment, I transcended the body that housed all my pain and I felt like I was with God. Actually, it felt as if I was God. Suddenly, I knew that my current efforts would indeed be successful in eliminating the cancer within my body. I also knew that I would not only live through the breakup of my twenty-one year marriage, but that I could let go with love, peace, gratitude and grace. And, in that brief moment I knew that I never was, nor would be alone. In the ocean, with the help of the angels of the sea, I experienced oneness. And, I healed!
This was an intensely spiritual experience for me, just as the near-death experience I had during my childhood. However, as transformative as these cosmic events are, we do not need to wait for them to happen to us. We can experience a degree of oneness every day in every moment if we chose. It only takes willingness, awareness and an open heart. It is possible to access the euphoric emotions of oneness when holding a newborn baby in our arms or lovingly brushing our Grandmother’s hair. It can be experienced through the beauty of a sunset, the rising of a full moon, from the laughter of children, or the intoxicating scent of a tropical flower. It is possible to feel the unity of life in an old-growth forest or in the biodiversity of a coral reef. And, we can experience oneness with The Divine through transcendent sex with our beloved.
These daily opportunities may offer us a more subtle shift in consciousness than an intense cosmic event, however, their effect is cumulative and over time, their influence is just as powerful.
